Don’t Use Your Debit Card Online
Most credit cards backed by major banks will refund money if you're a victim of online theft. But some debit cards don't offer the same guarantee. That's why it's safer to make online purchases with credit cards.
Get Your Free Annual Credit Report
The Fair Credit Reporting Act entitles you to receive free copies of your credit report from all three reporting agencies once every year. Just make sure you order them through the official site: AnnualCreditReport.com.
Assume It's Public
Having strict privacy controls on your social networks doesn't mean your posts won't go public. Any friends who can see your posts could copy and paste them elsewhere, so it's safest to assume everything you share is public.
Do Regular Vanity Searches
To see what's being posted about you online, you should periodically Google your name. Just be sure you search your name in quotes -- "First Last" -- so you find the most accurate results possible.
Use a GPS Finding Service
If you have an iPhone, iPad or Android phone, take advantage of GPS-based finding services. These services, such as Find My iPhone, help you locate and remotely wipe a lost or stolen device.
Store Travel Documents Online
Next time you travel, save your important travel documents -- itineraries, copies of identification and copies of credit card numbers -- to a cloud service, such as Google Docs, Dropbox or Box.net. If your laptop is stolen, you'll still be able to access your data from anywhere.
Use Blogging Pseudonyms
If you blog about your family members, use pseudonyms or nicknames for kids. You might share information that your child won't want on the Internet when he gets old enough to decide what level of privacy he wants.
Change Your Passwords Annually
Pick one memorable day of the year -- say, your birthday or anniversary -- and change passwords for your email, banking and online shopping accounts every year on that day.
Always Password-protect Mobile Devices
It might seem like a pain, but you'd be smart to password-protect your mobile device at every opportunity. Use a passcode for the device itself, and also use passcodes for any app that offers the capability, such as banking apps.
Secure Your Online Searches
When you're using Google in public, do your searches from Encrypted.Google.com instead of the main Google.com site. That way, your searches will be encrypted, which means they're impenetrable to prying eyes.
